The increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotic therapies has resulted in an expanding demand for novel therapeutics. Identification of new enzyme targets for the drug development pipeline is a particular priority. This project will be based in a research group with expertise in analysing enzyme structure and function including use of X-ray crystallography and development of high throughput assays for inhibitor discovery. The post, based in the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, will involve evaluation of selected bacterial enzymes as potential targets for antibacterial development, using a combination of enzymology and X-ray crystallography. Excellent facilities for protein structure analysis and for high throughput chemical biology are available. The successful applicant will join a highly active research team working in related areas.
It is desirable that applicants hold a PhD in chemical biology, biochemistry or structural biology and a strong background in enzyme biochemistry and/or protein X-ray crystallography.
The appointment is initially for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for a further 24 months. The proposed start date is July 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.
