cloning HD

Hello,

Sorry for the question if non-ccp4. I am using a HP workstation Xeon Z400. This has both windows  and linux Mint. I am using crystallographic programs with stereo setup in coot, o, pymol, vmd…. I bought a new exactly same desktop with all same hardware configurations except the old one has 160 GB hard disk and new one has 500 GB. What is the best way to get all my linux set up from old machine to the new one. I tried with clonezill and it did not work.  I am not sure if I selected the right package and version. Any suggestion would be very helpful. Looking forward to hearing from you…

There are many problems with what you are trying to do.

1.  Windows license is tied to the hardware, thus it's not likely to
work out of the box if you clone the whole drive.

2.  Even though it's the same computer model, the hardware (e.g. mobo)
may well be a different model.  This may trigger some problems (e.g.
uuid of the hard drives won't match), although modern os should deal
with some of these.

So, what exactly didn't work with clonezilla - did you clone the linux
partition and then it just does not work?  What exactly happens?

Frankly, it may be faster to have a fresh linux install and then set up
all the programs.  If you did this before on the older machine, then you
know what to do already.  If it was someone else, then you will learn a
lot.  And you have an advantage of the existing setup, so that you can
always check the relevant configuration files.
