A Research Associate position in structural biology is available in the laboratory of Professor
Neil Fairweather in the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection within the Division of
Cell and Molecular Biology at the South Kensington Campus.
Professor Fairweather's group studies the cell wall of the bacterial pathogen Clostridium
difficile, with the aim of understanding the role of surface proteins in bacterial disease. They
are currently funded by the MRC to determine the structure of cell wall proteins, including the
predominant S-layer protein, and to investigate their function.
We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate who will structurally characterise one or
more members of the cell wall protein family – see Fagan et al, Mol Micro 71, 1308-22

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in structural biology or a related field or
equivalent level of professional qualifications. You must have relevant research experience
in an academic environment, experience in structural biology, X-ray crystallography or
NMR, molecular biology and protein purification. Research experience in a microbiology
environment is desirable. Recent PhD graduates are eligible to apply.
You will have the ability to work as part of a team, be open minded, cooperative and show
initiative with research. You must have a creative approach to problem-solving and the ability
to develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods. Willingness to help with the
