The New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC) is looking for a highly
motivated individual to lead its protein production division. This
will entail leading a minimum of two projects engaged in
high-throughput protein production. Each of these projects employs a
team of technical staff and Ph.D.-level scientists who will report
directly to the successful candidate. One current project concerns
the New York Consortium on Membrane Structure (NYCOMPS) an
NIH-supported PSI:Biology Center for Membrane Protein Structure
Determination. Protein production in NYCOMPS includes a robotic
high-throughput cloning platform and protein production and
characterization pipeline with numerous automated elements. A second
funded project, involving a separate team, focuses on high-throughput
protein production and structure determination of targets from
pathogenic organisms and structural studies on selected eukaryotic
proteins. Protein production at NYSBC currently involves a staff of
10 including 5 Ph.D. scientists, and this group may expand in the
future.
The successful candidate will have entrepreneurial interests, be open
to new challenges, and be ready to seize opportunities. He or she
will have deep knowledge of prokaryotic and eukaryotic protein
expression and purification methods and high-throughput production
technologies. A Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a relevant area is required,
as well as ample postdoctoral experience. Expertise with integral
membrane proteins and/or x-ray crystallography would be helpful, but
are not absolute requirements. Good communications skills are a must,
as the successful individual will act as a liaison with funding
agencies and collaborating scientists, and provide outreach to the
larger scientific community. Responsibilities will also include
fulfilling all reporting requirements of the external funding
agencies.
NYSBC is a not-for-profit consortium of 10 of New York's preeminent
biomedical research centers that specializes in structural biology
research and research resources. NYSBC is well known throughout the
world for its extraordinary facilities and research projects in
structural biology. We offer an excellent compensation package, health
benefits and immediate participation and full vesting in the NYSBC's
retirement plan.
