Bio Rad "Econo" system

Dear CCP4BB,

Sorry for this off-topic question. However it would immensely help our not so greatly well-funded lab if people could share their experiences regarding Bio-Rad econo pump system.

We are planning to buy the Bio Rad "Econo" system or the Bio Rad "Bio Logic" system.  They are basically the same thing, but the Bio Logic is a bit fancier because it can be controlled by a windows pc.

We will be using this for preparative protein purification on the order of 1 to 10 mg of purified protein.  We require a method of for gradient formation for ion-exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography.

Opinions on this system from other academic or commmericial sector scientists who have used this apparatus would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Narayan

I've been using the Econo system for about 20 years for prep scale purifications.  I regularly do gradients using an external gradient maker (something like with Hoefer sells - http://www.hoeferinc.com/product.asp?ProdID=171) that feeds into the pump.  It's worked reliably for me and allows the use of cheap columns to boot.

Good luck,
Arthur

Dear Dr. Narayan

I have been using the Bio Logic LP System.
Bio logic LP system, well suited for low-pressure column such as
HiTrap or BioScale mini, to use the Mono Q or UNO column,
such as used in the FPLC is not suitable on this system.
I have tried to connect the Mono Q column, flow rate was the 1~3ml/30min...

In addition, Data View Software was very expensive, I had to build a
connected system to PC(windows7) by myself.

mini DIN 8pin connector and cable $5

Lab Jack U3-HV $114

thermal sensor LM61CIZ $1 (for Temperature monitoring, If you want)
