Two postdoctoral positions available at The Institute of Cancer Research, London/Sutton, UK

The Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit (CTU), embedded within the Division of Cancer Therapeutics, is a multidisciplinary 'bench to bedside' centre, comprising around 160 staff dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. The CTU's exciting goal is to discover high quality drug candidates for validated biological targets and to progress these candidates to clinical trial. All the scientific disciplines are in place to make this possible, including medicinal chemistry, biology, drug metabolism and clinical specialists.

Two postdoctoral positions are available in Dr Rob van Montfort's Hit Discovery and Structural Design (HDSD) Team within the CTU:

A postdoctoral position in protein crystallography is available from June 7th 2012 (Ref: 1238145). The Post-doc will be involved in high-throughput X-ray crystallography, fragment-based screening and structure-based drug design and will be responsible for crystallisation and structural analysis of protein-ligand complexes from the CTU's drug discovery programmes. The successful candidate will interact closely with the biology, computational chemistry and medicinal chemistry teams at the CTU as well as with the protein crystallographers in the Division of Structural Biology in which the crystallography efforts of Dr van Montfort's team are embedded. Therefore the successful candidate will be expected to work across the two sites in Chelsea, London and Sutton, Surrey. Applicants must have a PhD in a biological or physical science, and experience in macromolecular crystallography (to include protein biochemistry, protein crystallisation, & protein crystallography). Experience in molecular biology, protein purification, and/or structure-based drug design will be an advantage.

We are also seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral training fellow with experience in Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) to join the team (Ref: 1238162). The successful candidate is expected to develop the SPR expertise within the team and study the kinetics of inhibitor binding to the targets in the Unit's portfolio. Using the team's Biacore T200 SPR equipment, the postdoctoral fellow will carry out SPR fragment screening as well as detailed kinetic characterisation of inhibitors for a number of target classes (including kinases, ATPases, DNA repair and epigenetic enzymes). The successful candidate will impact on specific drug discovery projects within the portfolio as an integral member of the project team and will interact closely with the biologists, computational chemists, medicinal chemists and structural biologists. Applicants must have a PhD in a biochemistry or related biological subject and experience in Surface Plasmon Resonance methodologies. In addition, a strong experience in protein expression and purification is essential.

The starting salary for the positions will be in the range £27,536 to £38,225 p.a. inclusive (based on previous post-doctoral experience) and the posts are offered on a fixed term contract of 2 years.
